What do Ushers do? –  without trying to be comprehensive, we can list some of the task of a minister of hospitality:

  • Serves at the same mass they choose every Sunday with the holiday masses the exception.
  • Is present or provides a substitute for all assignments.
  • Arrives early and spends time in private prayer.
  • Reads in advance the scriptures for the day  (Since he or she may be distracted during the liturgy of the word.).
  • Checks the neatness of the church, picks up tissue, paper etc.
  • Straightens missalettes or song books.
  • Is properly attired and groomed.
  • Stands by an entrance and greets people, especially looking to welcome strangers and making them feel at home.
  • Invites and/or gives directions to those who will carry the gifts to the altar.
  • Seats people at appropriate times once mass begins. (Holidays only).
  • Does not move around during the readings.
  • Takes his or hers reserved seat in the back as soon as late comings subside, and continues to participate in the mass.
  • Readies the collection baskets, and takes up the collection with kindness and dignity.
  • Helps as needed, during the distribution of the Eucharist.
  • Stands near an exit with bulletins.
  • Wishes people a good day and send them home with a smile.
  • Checks the church for any valuables left behind.
